Portal Pack

Cubs from Portal Pack took on a Foodbank "advent calendar " challenge before Christmas to collect as many items as possible to donate to the Mid Cheshire Foodbank at Winsford. Between the Cubs and Leaders they collected 350 items. They visited the Foodbank this week to deliver what they had collected and to learn about what happens once the items are donated.

During the evening a volunteer from the Foodbank told the boys about how the items are processed and showed them round the warehouse. The volunteer thanked the Cubs for all their donations which he said would make a great difference to the work they are doing.

To round off our 100th year celebrations of Cubs we set ourselves an Advent Food Bank Challenge.

Just as Cubs will have an advent calendar that they open and receive something from each day from the 1st to 25th December cubs and leaders were asked to have an advent box into which we were asked put something on each of those 25 days that could become part of a Food Bank box of food when we hand it on.

On our last Pack night all the goodies that the boys collected were gathered in. We hope to deliver the goods in the New Year to a local food bank and visit to see what happens once the items are handed over.

Thank you so much to everybody that has helped make this a very successful challenge.

We also said "goodbye" to 4 of our older Cubs who are now too old for Cubs!, thank you Jay, William, Fynn and Tristan for being great Cubs.

Promise Party15 Cubs and Akela attended the Chester District Cub Scout Promise Party to mark the exact date of 16th December when 100 years ago Cub Scouting started. There were over 200 Cubs at the event from all Packs in Chester District some who were there for the party and some who then stayed on for the sleepover.

The evening started with all the Cubs joining in a sing song and dancing before all Cubs and leaders reaffirmed their promise at 19.16 and took time out to reflect on 100 years of Cubs Scouting.

There was then pass the parcel, food, the creepy crawley man and his animals, games, Cubs just meeting up with each other and having great fun.

The 150 Cubs sleeping over then got settled in sleeping bags with pillows and teddy bears to watch two films on a big screen, The Jungle Book and Up during which there was a time out for hot chocolate before it was lights out at 1.45am!!

Saturday morning saw lots of packing up, breakfast before the event drew to a close with a fantastic rendition of some camp fire songs. A brilliant time was had by all.

The annual District Cub Craft Competition took place this year on Sunday 8th February at Malpas Scout Group HQ. Portal Pack sent a team of 6 boys to compete against other Packs in the District.

The team was:

Finn Robinson, James Leftwick, William Oldroyd, Jack Goodwin, Jay Oliver and Tristan Dodwell-Cooke.

At the start of the afternoon all the teams listened to a talk from a visitor from the RNLI which gave them all a big hint at what the theme for the event might be!

After the talk the boys were given an hour and a half to complete the following tasks:

  1. Make a model of a lifeboat
  2. Make a lifeboat man out of clay
  3. Design a safety poster relating to the work of the RNLI

The judges observed all the teams and marked them on tidiness, team work, behaviour and the final models/posters produced.

Portal Pack won the competition and were presented with a certificate and the traditional trophy which they will hold for one year.

Victory also means that they represent the District at the County event on Saturday 7th May, this year to be held at Bunbury.

Well done to the team for their tremendous efforts, but even more for their good behaviour and tidiness which was remarked on by the judges.
